Biking and at the same time helping people in need ? Can do ! In collaboration with the NGO Broederlijk Delen, we traced out a mountain bike raid across Burkina Faso, one of the poorest countries in the world, but at the same time the safest country on the African continent.

Broederlijk Delen supports a number of farmer associations trying to cope with desertification in the Sahel. Hence the idea of scouting the region on bike and at the same time contributing in the construction of some water wells. The return of this raid is invested in water wells, to enable durable agriculture. 

We depart in the green west side of the country and bike to the north and the Sahel. Gradually you see the landscape, villages and fields change from green and fertile to ochre and barren. We bike nearly exclusively over smaller trails and tracks made for donkey carts, through villages where people look up in disbelief and wave back shyly.

You get to know the real Burkina, and the last day we pay a biking visit to the water wells which have been dug with our aid, and of course to the people we helped with them. A very special travel experience !

The stages are almost completely offroad, on hard laterite surface with here and there a short patch of sand. In the west we sometimes cross a shallow river bed. We can cover relatively large distances because of the small differences in altitude, the longest laps reaching about 65 miles.

Lodging is simple hostels.
